Overview

Established in 1997 by the Government of Tamil Nadu, Periyar University is situated in Tamil Nadu and has approximately 106 affiliated colleges. As a prominent state university in Tamil Nadu, it has recently launched a new portal, www.periyaredu.in, to provide various undergraduate and postgraduate programs online. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has accredited the university with a Grade A, while the University Grants Commission conferred 12 (B) status in 2005 and 2f status in 1998. Starting from the January 2021 batch, it provides online degree programs like BA in English, BCom, MA in History, MBA, MSc in Mathematics, MCom, and MA in English.

Named after the great social reformer E.V. Ramasamy, the University aims for holistic student development and disseminating knowledge. It adopted the Choice Based Credit System in 2008 and offers certificate courses since 2009. Periyar University offers a variety of online education courses in science, arts, and humanities, with both undergraduate and graduate programs available.  Key programs include BA English, BCom, MA History, MBA, and M.Sc. Math. The university is recognized by the DEB Distance Education Bureau, with merit-based admission for most courses. Undergraduate degrees take three years to complete with six semesters, while graduate programs are completed in two years with four semesters.

Available Scholarships

There are two types of scholarships available: 

1) Dr. Ambedhkar and Rajaji Meritorious Scholarship, awarded to one first-year PG student with the highest UG score among classmates, renewable for the second year if they pass all subjects in the first attempt.

2) Tuition Fee Waiver Scheme for B.Voc. students in Food Science and Nutrition/Textiles and Apparel Design, and physically disabled students in University Departments, regardless of their category and program enrolled.

Placement/Career Services:

The Periyar University Career Guidance and Placement Cell strives to secure placements for students in prestigious companies, government departments, NGOs, and private sectors. The cell conducts activities to enhance students' soft and language skills and provides support with interview preparation. It also organizes mock tests, group discussions, and insightful talks to help students acclimate to professional environments. The cell assists in the selection process based on company requirements and identifies suitable job opportunities for students. As per the 2019-20 Periyar University placement report (from NIRF data), 84 out of 146 eligible undergraduate students received job offers with a median salary of Rs. 9,60,000. For postgraduates, 169 out of 690 eligible students received job offers while 76 chose further studies. The median salary for postgraduate students was Rs. 1,20,000.

During the 2023 Periyar University placement drive, 20 students from the Department of Energy Science and Technology secured INR 3.6 LPA packages. Top recruiters included Face-Prep, Satellite Solar, Conserve Solution, Sky Solar, and Tech Clustron Energy Private Limited. The 2023 NIRF report revealed that out of 778 UG and PG students, 181 were placed in the 2022 placements with median packages of INR 3.50 LPA for UG (3-year) and INR 3 LPA for PG (2-year) students respectively.

Exam Guidelines:

Continuous Internal Assessments (CIA) for every subject consist of 3 parts, with each part having a 10-question MCQ test and a 3-question subjective test, totalling 25 marks per part. The best score from any of the three parts is considered for evaluation. Students access the CIA through the LMS. Online exams have 75 marks divided into Part A (25 MCQ questions) and Part B (5 out of 8 subjective questions). Students need laptops/desktops with cameras and good internet connectivity for online exams. Non-English subjects or those requiring graphs require students to upload answer sheets via QR scan code. Results are declared within 45 working days, and mark sheets are generated within 15 working days from the result declaration date.
